About

Artist Statement

Anna Charee is a West Michigan based artist working across drawing, painting, mixed media, embroidery, and installation. Her practice explores the interior landscapes that shape human experience: emotional memory, perception, conflict, connection, faith, and the unseen forces that influence how we move through the world.

Charee grew up feeling unable to articulate her interior life through words. Drawing and painting became her first form of authentic communication. Marks, color, line, form, and material gave shape to feelings that could not be easily spoken. Her work is rooted in a sustained curiosity about the emotional blueprint of a person: the experiences, relationships, losses, and acts of care that build a life.

Working primarily with charcoal, paint, and mixed media on Mylar, Charee builds images through an intuitive and responsive process. Forms accumulate, shift, erase, and return. The work holds density and openness, darkness and light, fragility and force. Each piece traces the internal movement of being human, including grief, fear, anger, joy, tenderness, endurance, and transformation.

Abstraction gives viewers space to encounter their own memories and emotional associations. The works do not prescribe a single reading. They invite reflection, recognition, and connection through forms that remain open. Each piece becomes evidence of what cannot be seen on the surface: a record of struggle, healing, and the questions that accompany a life.

For Charee, art is a place of refuge and a practice of taking up space. It is where she returns to herself, faces what is difficult, and gives form to the invisible. Through her work, a mark becomes a voice that cannot be taken away.
